Deja Vu

So, I was thinking earlier today and I came up with this idea of how deja vu works. Every night, you dream three or four times throughout your sleep cycle. Scientists explain dreams as your mind trying to make sense of random neural firings. What I think is that since you dream about things and places you are familiar with or have thought a lot about recently, dreams might be your mind simulating different possible scenarios. Occasionally, your mind will guess correctly, and that is deja vu.

At least when I have had deja vu, it seems to be about rather inconsequential things or common situations. It seems perfectly likely that given the sheer number of dreams people have that a few of these experiences might actually happen in real life.

  2. Deja vu is something I've never really understood. Your logic on the matter makes sense to me, though. Whenever I experience deja vu, it is also always in situations I find myself in frequently. But every once in a while, I find myself experiencing deja vu where I never would have thought.
In my dreams, I usually work through issues I'm having.

  3. The human mind is a mysterious thing - who knows how it works.

  4. Hm, this is an interesting theory.

...That's weird. I felt like I've written this comment before. Deja Vu, dude!

  5. Seems like a pretty solid theory.

  6. Hmm, that actually makes sense. However, sometimes we experience such an unique deja vu that its hard to believe it was result of a random sequence of dreams. Still, its a nice theory.

  10. I think this is definitely possible, most of the time I have deja vu it's just stupid stuff that really doesn't matter. Nice post though, got me thinking.

  11. Interestig idea, so the feeling of déjà vu is less of actual occurrences and more of random anomalus thoughts, like the human equivalent of a computer bug. I'm sure there should be an I Robot reference here.

  14. my deja-vu always seems to be about future events or sequences of events that take place
pity its always something like crossing the road somewhere or playing sports. not like something helpful such as winning lotto numbers or horse races

  15. There was another theory presented in something I read a while back that had something to do with the way your brain processes input, and that there's some sort of doubling of information (with slight delay) that may occur occasionally, leading to the phenomena we call deja vu.

  17. I agree @Cameron. I have the same feelings. But I also agree that it mostly has to do with dreams... maybe its our brains being psychic while we're sleeping. We just can't access that when we're awake! :o ahhhhhh
